When using a Louët Scotch tension wheel (such as the Victoria or S10C), you may notice a loud screeching sound or vibration coming from the flyer and bobbin when treadling without fiber.
This is normal behavior and not a defect.
Cause
The sound is caused by the bobbin vibrating on the flyer shaft when there is no tension from yarn.
Solution
Start spinning with a leader and fiber. Once there is tension on the system, the noise will disappear.
Because of small differences in tolerances between bobbins and flyer shafts, this effect may not occur with every bobbin or on every wheel.
