Sectional warping is another method of getting a warp on your loom. This method is particularly useful if you are making long warps with fine yarn. Sectional warping can only be performed on Louet floor looms. (treadle looms and dobby looms).
Sectional warping is less convenient if you use many different colors in your warp. With sectional warping, the warp is made in 2 cm or 1 inch sections. (Louet offers both types of sectional kits for our looms) No tie on rods are used for warping, but brackets ensure that the wound warp stays organized in the sections with even tension.
There are two methods:
The official method: the process in a nutshell
- You wind the required amount of yarn on bobbins. The number of bobbins you need is the number of threads per 2 cm or 1” inch. The amount of thread per spool is the number of sections x the warp length (add some extra just in case!)
- Place the bobbins on the bobbin rack
- The warp threads are guided through the tension box which ensures that all threads are wound with equal tension
- This tension box is placed on the back beam of the loom.
- The bundle of warp threads is attached to a section cord on the warp beam.
- The warp is wound on the section. The counter on the tension box keeps track of the number of meters or yards of warp as you wind it on.
- The tension box is moved to the next section, the counter is reset to 0 . The warp bundle is connected to the next section cord, after which this section is also wound to the desired warp length. This process is repeated until all sections of your desired weaving width have been made.
- There is no cross for threading, but the threads in the bundle are almost in sequential order and by following various tips that we will show, you will find that this method without a cross does not hinder threading at all. It just works a little differently (Instructional video to follow)
