Jack looms always return to a “rest” position after a treadle is released. Countermarche looms behave differently.
The Spring loom is a parallel countermarch: The weight of the shafts and the upper lam, hang on the inside texsolv cord and therefore there is more than the weight of one lam hanging on the outside texsolv cord. When the shafts are not forced by a treadle to a position for an open shed, the shafts tend to move down and the treadles move up. The weight of the treadles limit the imbalance, so the more treadles you tie to the lower lams the more weight helps to keep the shafts on The same level. This entire situation has no influence on the weaving. However, it does give some new Spring owners pause.
The Spring looms NEUTRAL position is when the locking pin is in place.
The Spring looms REST position, is wherever the harness want to rest! Warp tension, warp density and type of yarn all play a factor in where the rest position is. Ultimately, rest position is irrelevant since each treadle depression opens the shed and moves harnesses where they need to go.
The new Spring II has shafts and one lam attached to the outside cord.
