High Speed Spinning
Spinning thin yarns requires relatively more twist in your yarn. A high speed set adapts your wheel to make it easier to spin fine yarns.
You can achieve a higher spin speed not only by treadling faster, but also by selecting a different whorl. The difference in size between the main wheel and whorl is called the spinning ratio in spinning wheels. This works just like the derailleur gear system on a bicycle. At a ratio of 1 : 7.5, the small wheel turns 7.5 times per revolution of the large wheel. Placing the drive belt on a smaller whorl of the bobbin or whorls, increases the speed.
High Speed Scotch Tension Set (SA0117)
The braking system of the Scotch tension (a string and spring, or elastic cord) can be adjusted in much finer increments than with the Irish tension. Therefore, spinning thin yarns is easier on a Scotch tension system. The flyer of the Scotch tension High Speed set has much lower air resistance than the standard flyer, so that you can treadle slower and therefore faster at higher ratios. The ratio for scotch tension is chosen by placing the drive band on one of the whorls.
The ratios on the S10 Concept scotch tension are standard 1:6 / 1:8.5 / 1:12.5 / 1:19. With the High Speed set, a ratio of 1:27 is added.
The Victoria (S95/S96) has standard ratios 1:6 / 1:8.5 / 1:13, since the wheel is smaller. The ratio 1:20 is added with the High Speed Spinning set.
The 12 mm orifice can be changed between 8 or 5 mm using the white orifice insert.

Irish Tension High Speed spinning
With Irish Tension spinning wheels, the flyer is tensioned with a leather strap. The natural force pulling the yarn onto the bobbin is high with Irish Tension, particularly when the bobbin is empty. This can make spinning fine yarns more difficult. Our Fatcore bobbin simulates a half full bobbin and is available for the Irish Tension wheels.
Although the Irish tension high speed bobbins fit on our standard flyer, you will get greater benefit if you use them in combination with the high speed flyer. The high speed flyer has a smaller orifice and a sliding hook to easily spread the spun yarn across the bobbin. The lightweight design decreases air resistance.

- HIgh Speed Bobbin with ratios 1:6.5 / 1:9.5 and 1:15 (part number SA0113) (for comparison the standard bobbin has ratios 1:5.5 / 1:7.5 / 1:10.5)
- Fatcore bobbin (part number SA0115)
