The carding action happens because wool is introduced to the 2 drums that are moving at different speeds and the cloth is moving in opposite directions. The difference in size of drum is needed to get that different speed ratio, which creates the action that pulls fibers apart. A consequence of this action is that some fiber remains on the small drum, while the majority accumulates on the larger drum. The fiber on the smaller drum does not need to be removed as it will just keep accumulating. It can become waste, if different kinds of fibers are carded, different Color’s and due to this collection, it becomes undesirable. However, in general, the licker drum collected fiber is not waste. I hope that clears up your questions.
Why does Louet not have a packing brush?
Simply put - we always have had a packing brush - its called the licker drum. Louet’s carder is designed so the teeth on the main drum and licker drum mesh. One bi-product of this function is that the Louet drum carder is constantly packing the main drum with fiber thus no need for an extra attachment!
